Deer Fest then Feast!

Hi Friends,

We are back at our cabin from our adventure up on the North end of Kodiak.  We camped out and went Deer Hunting, and checked out on old cannery that the owner wants fixed up.  Our hard worked paid off as we were fruitful in our deer hunting endeavor.  George shot a nice heavy Spike Forked Deer perfect for eating.  This spike fork seemed abnormally big compared to others I have seen.  When surviving in the Alaska Bush we rely on our hunting and fishing to sustain our food stash.  There may be times when we will not be able to even get supplies from a town for over a month at a time.  In the winter it is crucial that you have food put away for survival.  …

Kodiak Island Retreat

We love to travel, but there is always something special about coming home.  We enjoy going places, but living in the Wilds of Alaska is the only place we feel truly at home.  This summer was filled with many exciting activities.  We started the Spring off by opening our cabin up in April.  It was about 20 degrees out.  There was close to 5 feet of snow on the pass from Kodiak to the landing where we store our boat.  There was also snow on the beaches and deer were out and about.  We put the boat in the water and the Suzuki motor started right up.  We went out to the cabin to open everything up for summer fun.  We still had 2 cords of firewood left to get …

Waiting for the Big Set

Hi friends,

It was a real pleasure to get to experience the Sitka Sound Herring Fishery up close and personal this spring.  The openers were in April.  Over the days of the openers, the 50 permit holders harvested 19,636 tons of herring roe, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/  Fishermen get paid according to the precious row which is the eggs found in the female fish.  last years price was $690 per ton which totalled 12.5 million dollars at the dock.  This years base price is $550 per ton but as last years base price was similar the value …

Fall in Kodiak

Hi Friends,

In Episode 3 we moved from Icy Bay to Kodiak on a NEW adventure. We got to Kodiak and lived aboard a friends 110ft Bering Sea crabber turned live aboard vessel. We stayed on our friends vessel while we were building a 16X32 cabin on an 80X80 foot dock that we parked in Crazy White Man Lagoon in episode 4. We make trip after trip to town and get trailer loads of lumber from the store, then we drive over a mountain pass to a boat landing. Then we load a 36 foot landing craft with the lumber and …

From Icy Bay to Kodiak

After spending six years in Icy Bay learning and discovering the area we got an offer to go to the Emerald Isle of Kodiak on an exciting NEW adventure!

We have friends in Kodiak that are building cabins on their land, and want to develop nature viewing and eco-tourism, which is something we really enjoy. So, we jumped on the opportunity and packed up and headed to Kodiak. It is so exciting to get to explore a new vast area. There are so many new and untouched areas where the fishing and bird watching is limitless, and pristine.

The first thing we do when we get to Kodiak is have to move an 80X80 dock in to a lagoon we call Crazy …

Summer is a great time to go Kayaking and sport fishing. We like to do Kayak adventures and catch lots of fish in the fresh and salt water. We make our own fishing jigs called the DAVIS SPANKER JIG.

Here is a picture of our catch

Kayaking Adventures are only limited to you and what you would like to do. Sometimes we just go for a small trip, sometimes we pack a camp and go for a real journey that lasts a week.

After a long day of fishing and Kayaking we …

Going up Icy Bay is a real treat. I love climbing on Icebergs, and getting to see the Harbor Seals that go up the bay to have their seal pups. Icy Bay has the largest congregation of Harbor Seals in the world. The seals go up the bay to have their pups and for some reason they do not have any predators. No Killer Whales come up the bay, which is the predator of the harbor seal.

Winchester likes to get on the ice too!

Besides going up the bay in a boat we had the opportunity to go up in a helicopter. The views from the helicopter are …

Icy Bay Adventure

Taking people up Icy Bay is an activity that is one of our favorites. Over the years we have taken many people up Icy Bay to get their pictures on Ice Bergs. Here is a picture of our friend Char from Florida, now she is brave!

After a journey up Icy Bay we take our friends to a waterfall for a pic-nic.

The day is not done yet, we need to go check the crab pot for dinner. We have a sport crab pot out that us residents are able to sport fish for Dungeness Crab. Here is a picture of George, Jeff and Devon and the …

Sea and Sky Expedition

We have been contacted earlier this month by a group of mountain climbers that want to climb Mt. St. Elias. They should be arriving any day now. They want us to help them up Icy Bay and watch their sailboat while they attempt to climb the mountain.

The Climbers arrived! They started out in Seattle and made it to Icy Bay. They came ashore to visit and go over their game plan. It took them 3 weeks to make it from Seattle. They were under power most of the way. They did sail a few legs of the journey weather permitting.

hey told us of their plan to go up Icy Bay and anchor their …

Melt Away

It is nice and sunny out today it got up to 40 degrees which is a big plus compared to what it has been. We are going to go for a beach cruise today and look for any sign of bears coming out of hibernation. They usually do not start coming out until mid and late April, but there was a set of 3 bear cubs that lost their mom and have been coming out of hibernation to eat what they could find on the beach like seaweed and mussels.

We went an met the mail plane, but no sign of baby bears.

Mail Run

Today we are going to go meet the mail plane to send our mail out and receive supplies. The plane is on skis due to all of the snow. The air taxi flies all winter here. They fly from Yakutat to Icy Bay. From Icy Bay to Cape Yakutaga and then they turn around and fly back to Yakutat. It is a real convenience that they do a mail run, so that we are able to get mail and supplies brought out to us all winter.

On the way to the runway this is what we have to drive across. All of this Ice has washed up and frozen up in Icy Bay.

Getting Ready for the Season

Hi Everyone,

This is the time of year when the snow and ice are thawing out. This is the time of year the bears are coming out of hibernation and us people that live in the wilderness are doing the same. We spend a lot of time outdoors doing what we have to do to survive. We cut firewood, we fish, we hunt, we have to fill our generator with gas so we have power for our electronics, and we have to go with our containers to a spring to get drinking water, because we do not have running water. All of this keeps us active and doing …

Lost Coast

Hi All,

We have been privileged to be asked by National Geographic to consult their photographer that is following the Trek of Andrew Skurka. He is doing a 5,000 mile trek starting near Nome, Alaska in Kotz. He will travel all the way down to Southeast Alaska to Juneau. After that he will head back North through the Yukon then end up back in Nome, Alaska. Of course his journey is more detailed than that, if you would like to look at the exact map we have the link you can click on. http//maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=111793047197007606960.00047e06852dc22d57643&z=5
