Hi friends!
Since winter is approaching this is the time of year we get prepared. George and I go hunting for Deer, fishing for Halibut and Salmon, and collecting Berries for Jam. We also work daily on getting firewood cut split and stacked in a Dry Place. In Episode 5,6 and 7 you will see first hand what it takes to get ready for winter here out in the Wilds of Alaska. In Kodiak residents are allowed to shoot and harvest 3 deer per person. Some deer we average about 50-60 pounds of meat after we butcher, trim and wrap the meat. This season we were so hungry for protein that the first deer we got we devoured! We had not been buying any meat from the store and living off of fish. When deer season opened George went out the door and said he was not coming home without a deer. He was right he did come home with a deer! Us and the dogs were ecstatic because they had not had any treats like they usually get from us. They get to eat the fat and bones. They love it and inhaled about 10 puonds of trimmings in one evening. It is like they truned in to wolves. Wolves eat sparatically so when they get a kill they eat untill they can not eat no more. That is what the dogs reminded me of.
It is a big job to cut and chop and stack firewood, but that is what it takes to stay warm and not to mention alive! We are also using our wood stove to cook on so we really rely on wood for survival.
